The National Post is running excerpts from Nick Hornby's new book, Songbook, all this week. It sounds like a great idea -- essays on some of Hornby's favourite songs and a CD to go along with it. He makes the not-exactly-groundbreaking argument that not all pop is bad and there's still a lot of great music out there. However, I find his selections somewhat troublesome, such as Nelly Furtardo's "I'm Like a Bird". Is it possible to completely agree with someone on theory but disagree with his choices? I think so. After all, that has a different definition of what is trash and what is transcendental brilliance. I'll probably end up getting Songbook anyway. But
I'm still holding out for an I Love Music or Freaky Trigger anthology...
